About
Stonedhenge was the British blues band’s third album. It continues the musical eclecticism of the band’s first two LPs, Ten Years After and the live Undead, with elements of traditional jazz and blues now being balanced with the band’s emerging rock presence. This is the expanded 2002 U.S. reissue, which features four bonus cuts, including the single edit of the more rock-based “Hear Me Calling,” a near fifteen-minute version of “Boogie On,” which accentuates the band’s standard boogie mode, the single-edit of “I’m Going Home” and “Woman Trouble,” a track that appears here in two versions. There’s a brief drum piece by Ric Lee (“Three Blind Mice”), a walking bass interlude from Leo Lyons (“Faro”), a classical piano interlude from keyboardist Chick Churchill (“I Can’t Live Without Lydia”), and a few brilliant early Alvin Lee pieces in “Going to Try,” “A Sad Song” and “No Title.” While Alvin Lee has received his just due for being a blues guitarist of great renown, the keyboard accompaniment, especially the organ, from Chick Churchill drives the engine of the group as well.
