About
Members of The Plimsouls and their fans alike often griped that the band’s studio albums didn't capture the reckless energy of their live act, which many witnesses say was the best in Los Angeles in the early '80s. To rectify their legacy, the band released this 1981 concert document in 1988, five years after the group split up. Recorded at the Cleveland stop of their first national tour, One Night in America was described this way by frontman Peter Case: “We were explosive, held nothing back, gave our all even though the place was less than half filled. People out there (in Cleveland) hadn’t heard of us much yet, and we had a lot to prove.” The crushing version of the band’s signature “A Million Miles Away” should leave no doubt that the band always considered themselves a rock gang, not a pop act. They also knew how to throw a great party. Their covers of Larry Williams’ “Dizzy Miss Lizzy,” Marvin Gaye’s “One More Heartache," and Jimmy Reed’s “Help Yourself” make the case that The Plimsouls were among the great garage-born R&B howlers of their era.
