3 is the fourth studio album by Violent Femmes, released in January 1989. It was recorded at Carriage House in Connecticut and Home Base in New York City, and co-produced by the band along with Warren Bruleigh. The album runs approximately 36 minutes and blends alternative rock with folk-punk influences. AllMusic describes the production as stripped-back and acoustic, catering to fans of their early material. Trouser Press noted that Gordon Gano’s songwriting retained its distinctive character though the band did not explore new directions. Despite its modest mainstream impact, peaking at number 93 on the Billboard 200 and number 64 on Australia’s ARIA charts, the album has been praised for its clean, unadorned presentation and authentic feel. Following the release of 3, original drummer Victor DeLorenzo left the band, marking the end of the group’s original lineup until his return in the 2000s. (Victor DeLorenzo rejoined Violent Femmes in 2000 after his initial departure in 1993 and remained with the band until 2009. He also participated in the brief reunion in 2013 before departing again that same year.).
