About

The wonder of Miles Davis' mid-‘50s output is his ability to play a familiar song in unexpected ways. Once a jolly show tune, "Surrey With the Fringe on Top" becomes a moody, midtempo exploration with a gentle solo from Davis and a more frantic one from John Coltrane. Pop standard "I'll Remember April" twists itself into freewheeling knots as Davis and his early quintet fearlessly reinterpret its melody. The strolling "Doxy" and fleet, rollicking "Airegin" feature fluid interplay with sax giant Sonny Rollins.
