Released on the 25th anniversary of Jacques Brel’s death, this compilation reveals the emotional range of his moody, melodic oeuvre. From the dramatic desperation of "Ne me quitte pas," through an urgent live take on his deliriously decadent signature tune, "Amsterdam," to the against-all-odds optimism of "La quête," the Belgian <i>chansonnier</i> throws an almost life-endangering amount of himself into everything he touches. Few other artists have matched the gutter-to-the-stars zeal injected into each and every one of these songs.
