About

In their heyday, Babes in Toyland were one of rock's most amazing live presences, with singer Kat Bjelland screaming and rolling her eyes up into her head. The Minneapolis trio drew on riot grrrl stances without explicitly copping to the ideology; their raw sound drew fans who similarly didn't identify with the movement. After Spanking Machine, Babes' remarkable indie debut, they signed with Reprise. Fontanelle, produced by Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo, makes a lot of its major-label peers of both genders sound timid by comparison. "Bruise Violet" and "Handsome and Gretel" are standouts - the former even impressed MTV's Beavis and Butt-head - but if it's roaring catharsis you're looking for, nothing less than this whole album will do.
