About

The Masked Marauders were an inside joke at Rolling Stone magazine that became a reality due to popular demand. In the late '60s, when it seemed as if quite a few name musicians were teaming up to form supergroups (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Blind Faith; Al Kooper's Supersessions), some Rolling Stone editors wrote a satirical review claiming that sessions involving John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, and Bob Dylan had been produced by Al Kooper and released on the Deity label, including such soon-to-be-classics as "I Can't Get No Nookie," an instrumental called "Cow Pie," and covers of "Duke of Earl," "The Book of Love," and a 10-minute jam of Donovan's "Season of the Witch." Letters to Rolling Stone demanded the product, and the editors soon grabbed Bay Area musicians to perform the songs mentioned in the review and instructed them to try to sound like the musicians mentioned. Warner Brothers agreed to release the album, and it charted. If you know someone who's unaware of the truth, it could be an enjoyable prank.
