Giant Steps is the fifth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane as leader. It was released in February 1960 on Atlantic Records. This was his first album as leader for Atlantic Records, with which he had signed a new contract the previous year. The initial sessions for this album—Coltrane’s second recording date under his new contract, following a January 15 session led by Milt Jackson—were held on March 26, 1959. Coltrane was dissatisfied with the performances from that date, which featured pianist Cedar Walton and drummer Lex Humphries, and the material was ultimately left off the original album, later .
