About

Kulu Sé Mama is a free jazz album by John Coltrane, recorded during 1965 and released in January 1967 by Impulse! Records (A-9106; AS-9106 for stereo). It was the final album issued during Coltrane’s lifetime. The material was assembled from three separate recording sessions. The ballad ‘Welcome’ was recorded on June 10, 1965, at Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, by Coltrane’s classic quartet. A second session on June 16 at the same studio produced ‘Vigil’, while additional recordings from these dates later appeared on albums such as Living Space, Transition and various CD reissues.
