Produced by Bernie Leadon (of The Eagles and The Flying Burrito Brothers) and Brian Ahern (Nashville producer and husband of Emmylou Harris), David Bromberg’s 1975 album <i>Midnight on the Water</i> features one of the decade’s greatest congregations of musicians. The guest list includes Dr. John, Bonnie Raitt, and Linda Ronstadt, in addition to country and bluegrass superstars like Doyle Lawson, Ricky Skaggs, and Red Rhodes. Bromberg’s idiosyncrasies keep the album from being overly smooth. He improvises goofy lyrics for a warm and slightly tipsy rendition of Sam Cooke’s “(What A) Wonderful World,” while “I Like to Sleep Late in the Morning” epitomizes his immaculate-but-skewed approach to playing. While “Yankee’s Revenge” and “If I Get Lucky” affirm his chops as a master of American acoustic music, the full-band arrangements are the main attraction. Though most listeners consider Bromberg a folk singer at heart, “Nobody’s” and “Mr. Blue” have a melancholy, unspooling quality reminiscent of the albums that R&B maestro Bobby Womack was creating during the same period.
