About
Conceived during a period of personal upheaval for frontman Dave Mustaine, who was struggling with substance abuse, So Far, So Good… So What! nonetheless contains several of Megadeth’s fiercest moments. The album opens with two positively infernal tracks: the volcanic instrumental “Into the Lungs of Hell” and “Set the World Afire,” a vision of a dystopian future that barrels down upon the listener with the force of a tsunami. While critics derided Megadeth for the freeway mischief of “502” and the cover of “Anarchy In the U.K.,” the tantrum-prone juvenilia of those songs fits right in with the Megadeth philosophy. The album’s centerpiece, “In My Darkest Hour” was written following the death of Mustaine’s former bandmate, Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. Unlike most tribute songs, the lyrics avoid sentimentality and instead delve into feelings of resentment, self-hatred, and empathy. Under its militaristic riffs, the song is a surprisingly vulnerable communiqué to Mustaine’s fallen friend, and it remains one of the most powerful moments in Megadeth’s career.
