About
Guster have yet to release a boring tune. Every single song on 2010’s Easy Wonderful is catchy. The opening “Architects & Engineers” is loaded with Beatlesque barbs and Beach Boys-inspired "oohs" that grapple the listener as the indie-boy charm of singers Adam Gardner and Ryan Miller work an earnest kind of magic. “Do You Love Me” is perfect guitar pop — it’s got a nostalgic narrative, church bells and an uplifting bridge that would have had Sassy magazine issuing out a “Cute Band Alert” had it not folded in 1996. The buoyant “This Could All Be Yours” is another obvious standout with its soaring refrain while the mellower “Stay With Me Jesus” plays like a spiritual Kinks ditty. Continuing on a quasi-theme, the acoustic based “That’s No Way To Get To Heaven” and the danceable “Jesus & Mary” flirt with religious imagery while casting more hooks than a fishing net. Of the four bonus tracks “Well” gets the hushed folkie treatment, “Jonah” rocks with reverb, “Lost At Sea” bounces on piano-rock and “OK Alright” gets a bit roots-y.
