About
After sticking a foot in the psych-pop pool with their previous album, Evolution, The Hollies leapt in wholeheartedly on this record, which was titled Butterfly in the U.K. and named for its two hit singles—"Dear Eloise" and "King Midas in Reverse"—in the States. The former tune bears a childlike, carnival-esque quality, while the latter is a sharp-toothed takedown of a toxic character. "Maker" features mind-expanding lyrics and an ethereal, sitar-fueled production. "Try It" boasts spacy sound effects, backward tapes, and invitations to take a senses-shattering journey that one can only assume is lysergic in nature. But no matter how far out The Hollies venture, they intersperse their heady expeditions with sunny pop tunes like the summery, good-time track "Wish You a Wish" and the peppy "Postcard." So even if fans don't want to ride a magical beast like "Pegasus (The Flying Horse)," there are still plenty of rich harmonies and ear-catching hooks to hang one's hat on.
