About

Bands that emerge from the true indie underground music scene often release several versions of their “debut album” before an actual debut album appears. Riot Grrrl leaders Bikini Kill flirted first with a 1991 cassette, then a 1992 EP, and even a split-LP with Huggy Bear before getting around to this 12-track “album” that—in true punk fashion—says everything it needs to say in 25 minutes. That’s quality time. “Rebel Girl” is the anthem that shows up regularly, but “Alien She,” “Sugar,” and “Hamster Baby” are songs that hinge on the idea that professionalism would only suffocate the band’s anarchic energy. Because, at this point, it would.
