About
Washington, D.C.’s Shudder to Think represent everything ever intended for indie-rock bands in the ‘90s. Led by versatile singer Craig Wedren and backed by a band of instrumentalists who could break into whatever style struck their fancy, while remaining locked in step with each other, Shudder to Think challenged rock conventions while fulfilling them. This live album from their 2008 re-grouped tour finds the band in sharp form, clearly excited to be playing together again. Their eclectic, flexible catalog gets a full workout. The immediate pop charms of “Red House,” the extra-venom behind “Hit Liquor,” the swerving solid highway drive of “Lies About the Sky” pull together the hooks amidst the darkness. The band’s accessibility is part of their perversity. Dark tales lurk under the passionate hard — some call it punk — rock. The audience is miked for loud, ambient effect and listening here you could easily be tricked into thinking that these gentlemen were megastars alongside U2 and Radiohead in their era — and not “cult” faves who brushed alongside the mainstream.
