About
With each ensuing album, Vetiver tighten up their sound and prove themselves ever more radio-ready for a soft-country-folk station that still plays the best in early-‘70s Laurel Canyon music. The smooth, layered sound of “Hard to Break” sounds like a mix of the Eagles and America, where a Southwestern sundown is implied in the gentle lope and the carefully crafted backing vocals. Producer Thom Monahan brings his experience with the Pernice Brothers to full effect. Singer and leader Andy Cabic keeps things soothing throughout, with vocals that float in the middle of the mix. “Fog Emotion,” “Right Away” and “Soft Glass” drift to sea with genuine warmth. “Wonder Why” adds a shimmering guitar and Beach Boys harmonies. “Ride Ride Ride” throws in a choogling Creedence Clearwater Revivial rhythm. Cabic and crew keep getting better.
