Guitarist Robert Quine, who went on to work with Lou Reed and inspire his solo career, had the foresight to record the Velvet Underground back in 1969 when the band was working around the San Francisco area. The band was hardly a success at this point, playing to what sounds like a half-full house. However, their influence on punk and post-punk would explode in the ensuing decades. These audience recordings are in glorious mono and mostly redeemed by the band’s ferocious commitment to its material. There are three versions of “Sister Ray” here, none shorter than 24 minutes. This is spirited overkill, and much appreciated by their rabid cult. Several rarities (“It’s Just Too Much,” “Over You,” “Ride into the Sun,” “Follow the Leader”), band staples (“I’m Waiting for the Man,” “What Goes On,” “Sunday Morning”) and previews of material to be featured on the soon-to-be-recorded and final Reed-led album <i>Loaded</i> (“New Age,” “Rock ‘n Roll”) make this a well-balanced, if exhaustive, collection.
