Coming after the high-profile success of <i>Raising Sand</i>, Krauss’ collaboration with Robert Plant, <i>Paper Airplane</i> reunites Krauss with her old band Union Station for tunes that are often somber either in tone or in theme. Robert Lee Castleman’s country ballad, “Paper Airplane,” opens the album and sets the tone. Peter Rowan’s “Dust Bowl Children,” with Dan Tyminki on vocals, works on the uptick and “Lie Awake” keeps an easeful lope, but the tension is beginning to build as Krauss’ vocals indicate an emerging desperation. Richard and Linda Thompson’s “Dimming of the Day” retains its forlorn cadences. Jeremy Lister’s “Sinking Stone” and Jackson Browne’s “My Opening Farewell” offer the perfect pathos for Krauss to bring forth a worldview that has many unanswered questions. However, Union Station bring their expert musicianship and lift the tragedy of Sidney Cox’s “Bonita and Bill Butler” with passionate, precise banjo, the kind that has always brought great relief to bluegrass bands the world over.
