About

The eclectic multi-instrumentalist from Texas, who prides himself on his mastery of a variety of styles including jazz, country and Cajun music, gets ruffled when he's called a blues guitarist. Nonetheless, that's the role he plays on this scalding recording. He revisits his home state, and his own primary six-string influence, by covering T-Bone Walker's swinging "Strollin' with Bones," then gives a nod to one of his own students with Albert Collins' hot-riffing "Frosty." Brown revisits the catalog of his first label, the notorious and legendary Duke/Peacock imprint, performing close-to-the-bone versions of Junior Parker's "I Feel Alright Again" and Percy Mayfield's poetic "Give Me Time to Explain." His original tunes "Dollar Got the Blues" and "Sometimes I Slip" here are sterling examples of his elegant craftsmanship and flair for wringing raw emotion from deft, clean-toned solos.
