Working with producer Peter Asher, Bonnie Raitt fills <i>The Glow</i> with a bold, muscular sound that marries soul music and rock ’n’ roll. Opening with a cover of "I Thank You," Raitt out-funks Stax legends Sam & Dave at their own game, turning out a bassy, speaker-rumbling strut machine. Meanwhile, the original song "Standin' By the Same Old Love" has Raitt singing with a slight, no-nonsense vibrato, grinding it out to an ode about the troubles and rewards of staying with someone for the long haul.
