About
The Avant-Garde is a 1966 album credited to John Coltrane and Don Cherry, released by Atlantic Records. It draws from two previously unissued sessions recorded in June and July 1960 at Atlantic Studios in New York. The album features Coltrane performing compositions by Ornette Coleman alongside members of Coleman’s quartet: Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Ed Blackwell. Although Coltrane and Coleman studied and played together, they never recorded a joint album. The release was part of Coltrane’s Atlantic period (1959–1962), and its free jazz approach drew controversy at the time. Personnel: John Coltrane – tenor and soprano saxophoneDon Cherry – cornetCharlie .
