About
Recorded live at London’s Talk of the Town in 1970, this stunning set captures 20-year-old Stevie Wonder’s transition to adulthood. The recording quality is top-notch, as are the performances, which range from Vegas-style big-band stormers (“Pretty World,” “For Once in My Life”) to breathless R&B (“I Was Made to Love Her”) to aching wonders (“Bridge Over Troubled Water” and an instrumental version of the Bacharach/David classic “Alfie”). The strutting finale—“Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)”—brings down the house, conveying true musical and emotional verisimilitude. Wonder’s between-song gab is priceless, while the mid-set drum solo is a study in musical pyrotechnics.
