About
Silversun Pickups’ seventh album is built on contrasts. The group presents depth and ferocity in equal doses, creating what is both the most immediate and visceral LP in the band’s discography, and one with a meticulous ear for detail. The LA collective, which consists of Brian Aubert, Nikki Monninger, Christopher Guanlao, and Joe Lester, decided to reunite with legendary producer Butch Vig for the third project in a row, and the veteran steadying presence behind the boards allows the band to loosen itself in all sorts of exciting directions. “New Wave” is a slow-burning opener that eventually reveals DNA that can be traced back to early 2000s emo and ’90s grunge, while “Witness Mark” revolves around the interplay between guitar and bass, finding satisfaction in its unwillingness to resolve. It’s this tension, exciting and nervy, that animates the entirety of Tenterhooks.
