Some of the initial North American pressings of the vinyl version of Carl and the Passions - So Tough in 1972 were packaged in a gatefold album sleeve that included Pet Sounds as a bonus record in a "2-for-1" deal. Some of the cassettes and 8-tracks releases did the same. The reputation of this mono pressing of Pet Sounds as being superior to the original 1966 pressing and all subsequent mono reissues/remasters has circulated for a while in Beach Boys fandom. Several "needledrops" of it have circulated as a result. .
