This under-the-radar 1973 jewel captures the maestro of melancholy down and out in Europe—excepting "Queen Victoria," which he recorded in a Tennessee hotel room. The material, mainly from <i>Songs From a Room</i>, is bleak, but his delivery is impeccable. Highlights include a talismanic "Bird on the Wire," a graceful guitar improvisation, and "Please Don't Pass Me By (A Disgrace)," in which Cohen numbers himself among the world's outcasts during a cathartic London sing-along.
