After spending most of the '90s trying to be the heaviest version of themselves they could possibly be, Anthrax used 2003’s <i>We’ve Come for You All</i> to focus on classic rock 'n' roll songwriting. Of course this is a band that will never abandon their belief in playing loud, hard, and aggressive, but “Safe Home,” “Cadillac Rock Box,” and the excellent “Taking the Music Back” (featuring none other than Roger Daltrey on guest vocals) are rock songs directed not just at metal diehards but the masses. Rather than pander to the mainstream, Anthrax appeared to be encouraging the mainstream to get a little more hard-hitting. Some of the album’s catchiest riffs also happen to be its heaviest, including “What Doesn’t Die,” “Refuse to Be Denied,” and “Any Place but Here.” Nearly 20 years after the release of their debut, <i>Fistful of Metal</i>, the band were affirming that their brand of aggressive rock had now become classic rock. They'd earned the right to be grand and accessible without sacrificing their core values. As they say on the epic closing track, “W.C.F.Y.A.”: “Your chest contains no treasure/The prisoners are loose/We've come for you all.”
