About
The Portland (by way of Idaho) band Nurses returns to trio formation on their third studio album, Dracula, with the addition of percussionist James Mitchell. Recorded at a homemade studio they built inside an Oregon cabin, “Fever Dreams” sets the tone; Nurses build a mechanical foundation of kinetic drumwork and then layer reverb-drenched, shoegazing guitars and androgynous vocals over it. “You Lookin’ Twice” follows: Mitchell pumps out grooving rhythms as Aaron Chapman sings sublimely catchy lyrics in a nasal inflection that recalls early Joanna Newsom tracks. Melodica and heavy echo give “Dancing Grass” a wonderful dose of dub—though even here, Nurses’ tendency to make solid grooves and contagious melodies can’t be contained. Whether they’re building songs on ever-changing arrangements or solid structures, Nurses’ knack for baiting barbed pop hooks is evident throughout, most noticeably on “Trying to Reach You,” an avant-pop standout that lets listeners dance through the art. And the melodic confection blossoming from the cacophony of “Gold Jordan” is just natural genius.
