About

The Sleepy Jackson is effectively Luke Steele’s one-man band, but there are many Luke Steeles. This 1999 debut LP features alt-country (“Old Dirt Farmer”), alt-rock (“Vampire Racecourse”), psychedelic (“Come to This”), and orchestral pop (“Good Dancers”), along with Dylanesque balladeering (“Acid in My Heart”). Broadly in early Beck territory, this album is full of big gambles that pay off in surprising ways. Because they’re essentially rooted in the blues and country traditions, though, the songs hold together to create one eclectic piece.
