Coming out of Brooklyn, Masta Ace has been serving up top-quality hip-hop since the late '80s, when he debuted alongside The Juice Crew on the much-loved posse-cut classic "The Symphony." While most of that era's emcees have faded into obscurity, Ace has continued to quietly drop excellent albums every few years. Where many rappers record a few singles and a gang of filler, Ace does the opposite; his last several projects (<i>Disposable Arts</i>, <i>A Long Hot Summer</i>, <i>The Show</i>) were straight-up concept albums that told detailed stories from start to finish. That trend continues with <i>MA_Doom</i>, as he drops 16 autobiographical tracks that flash back to his youth ("Nineteen Seventy Something"), being a fan of old-school heroes ("Fresh Fest"), and touring cross-country ("Home Sweet Home"). Every joint is produced by MF DOOM, who revisits instrumentals previously rocked by Monsta Island Czars, King Gheedorah, Kurious, and the <i>Special Herbs</i> beat tapes. It's a great album from two certified legends.
