About

Bill Fay released a couple of albums in the early 1970s that never found a sizable audience (<i>Bill Fay</i>, <i>Time of the Last Persecution</i>) and his talents were known to a select few who had bothered to listen to them. One listener turned out to be Joshua Henry, who grew up listening to his dad's record collection. Henry tracked him down and convinced the reticent Fay to record a new album. So, with a backing band, a modest string section, singers from the London Community Gospel Choir, several musicians who'd accompanied Fay back in the early 1970s and longtime fan, Jeff Tweedy, Fay had everything at his disposal to make the record that had been locked inside his heart for decades. These are spiritually true songs with ghostly resonances. "Big Painter" captures both the darkness and the light, with the feeling of music recorded in the parlor. "Never Ending Happening" evokes memories of other once-obscure singer-songwriters, Nick Drake and Judee Sill, in its beautiful orchestration. "This World" and "The Healing Day" add a full band line-up. The Wilco cover "Jesus, Etc." features just Fay at the piano.
