On <i>Ascent</i>, Ben Chasny reunites with his former bandmates from Comets On Fire for a spaced-out acid-rock missive that trades in his usual hushed acoustics for overdriven guitars and lumbering drums. “Waswasa” kicks things off with a coiled psych-rock riff that spirals out into a cosmic solo, before “Close to the Sky” sees the band transform an old Six Organs song into a bluesy, spacious slow-burner, locking into a groove that makes it feel like no time has passed since their last jam session.
