About
Matthew Herbert trades house music’s clubby intensity for the sweetest kind of domestic comfort on this 1998 album, which bridges his early dance-floor singles and later conceptual projects. The UK producer’s search for unconventional samples leads him to flip clattering kitchen utensils into ingenious polyrhythms, while frequent collaborator Phil Parnell’s piano brings expressive jazz tonalities to songs like “The Last Beat.” The album’s secret star is Herbert’s then-partner Dani Siciliano, whose cool, breathy voice gives “Going Round” and “So Now” their tender, playful grace.
