About

On his debut, DJ Quik laid the groundwork for the G-funk sound, pulling from a wide range of soulful samples. “Tonite” leans on “Tonight” by Kleeer and “Tonight Is the Night” by Betty Wright—and still manages to be both spare and danceable. “Deep” lays a razor-fine guitar loop over horns from Fred Wesley. And “8 Ball” dips into, perhaps, the most recognizable funk bassline of all time, courtesy of Herbie Hancock, nestling it among ad-libs and scratched vinyl while Quik kicks his relaxed party rhymes.
