About

Recorded at the Santa Barbara County Bowl in September 1979 during her tour supporting Mingus, Shadows and Light was Joni Mitchell’s second double-LP live album. The years 1975 through 1979 had been adventurous ones for Mitchell. The all-star band here—consisting of guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist Jaco Pastorius, drummer Don Alias, keyboardist Lyle Mays, and saxophonist Michael Brecker—are among the few that could bring the complex songwriting of “In France They Kiss on Main Street,” “Coyote,” Charles Mingus’ “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," and “The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines” to palpable life. This album remains underrated in Mitchell’s catalog.
