About

Like many artists who'd made their names in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Joni Mitchell created intriguing music in the '80s that didn’t always find an audience. On this album she remains sociopolitically engaged, whether she's addressing water pollution (a rewrite of Bob Nolan’s country classic “Cool Water” with Willie Nelson guesting), Native American issues (“Lakota”), or war stories (“The Tea Leaf Prophecy,” “The Beat of Black Wings”). Peter Gabriel joins her on the rediscovery of teenage love (“My Secret Place”), with Don Henley adding backing vocals to “Lakota” and “Snakes and Ladders.” Mitchell and coproducer Larry Klein use a keyboard-heavy sound to their advantage.
