About
This Canadian sextet put matters of the heart first and foremost on this likeable if undemanding entry into the country-pop sweepstakes. Emerson Drive’s sound goes easy on the twang factor, taking more than a few cues from co-producer Richard Marx’s ‘80s-era hits. Though Pat Allingham’s fiddle licks add a down-home touch, the arrangements lean as much towards light rock and R&B as anything countrified. Vocals are the band’s big drawing card, with lead singer Brad Mates projecting a tender yet masculine presence. Seamless harmonies lift the choruses on “Fall Into Me,””Say My Name,””Light of Day” and similar tunes. From flirtation (“Looking Over My Shoulder”) to infatuation (“I Should Be Sleeping”) and devotion (“Only God (Could Stop Me Loving You)”), the songs offer a positive spin on romance. There are some steamy moments, such as Mates’ growl-tinged delivery on “Hollywood Kiss.” Emerson Drive is consistently tuneful and smoothly played, the perfect accompaniment for a trip down lover’s lane.
