On their sixth studio album, Between the Buried and Me craft an audacious prog-rock opus with an extraordinary palette of inspirations. The tranquil "Goodbye to Everything" is out-of-this-world psych rock, while the sonic mélange of "Telos" flits between breakneck hardcore and cool-cat jazz, and "Astral Body" alternates metalcore growls with controlled math-rock fretwork. The LP's high point, however, is the brutal "Extremophile Elite," which stitches together thrash-metal fury, cartoon-like sound effects, and snake-charming blues riffage over 10 turbulent minutes.
