Coheed and Cambria's sonic ambitions have only grown deeper over time, and on the twisting <i>The Afterman: Ascension</i>, they deploy just about every weapon in their sonic arsenal. "Key Entity Extraction I: Domino the Destitute" flows on a continuum of gnarled prog riffage, majestic psychedelic sludge, and theatrical, fuzzed-out metal, while "Goodnight, Fair Lady" mixes power pop and classic rock with askew, dime-turning rhythms. That the whole thing is only the first half of a double album only further cements C&C’s restless, sprawling vision.
