About

Recorded at an Atlanta large-venue show in 1959, Ray Charles in Person catches the man and his band in a fiery, varied program of R&B burners (an impossibly slow, lengthy “Drown in My Own Tears,” an erotic, near-meltdown “Night Time is the Right Time” and, of course, “What’d I Say”) and big-band showcases (“Frenesi,” “Yes, Indeed!”). Much has been written about the apocalyptic feel of Charles shows of this era and this album, simply, is a monster. The give-and-take between Brother Ray and his audience is more subdued, but as timeless, as that heard on James Brown’s Live at the Apollo – and certainly In Person is as much a classic in its own right. Meltdown? What a lovely way to burn.
