This supergroup saw guitar hero Jeff Beck and the rhythm section from Vanilla Fudge and Cactus join forces for a single studio album. It’s a mountainous affair that features jazz-rock climbs of improvisation (“Why Should I Care”), dramatic bits of gospel/R&B (Don Nix’s “Sweet Sweet Surrender”), and four-on-the-floor highway blues (“Livin’ Alone”). They turn Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and Curtis Mayfield’s “I’m So Proud” into sweet boogie resurrections, while the lilting slide guitar of “Black Cat Moan” and the Cream-like “Lady” will no doubt satisfy fans of classic-era Beck. The sonics and songs have aged extremely well since this album's 1973 release.
