About
Anita O’Day concluded her contract for Verve Records with this surprising session. She made her name fronting big bands, but here she works with the diminutive Three Sounds. The Gene Harris-fronted trio would soon achieve fame for sleek soul-jazz, but here it lends simpatico support, shadowing the singer’s rhythmically sophisticated delivery. O’Day excels on swinging material, like an insinuating take on “You and the Night and the Music,” but it’s her balladry that impresses most, like the delicate read of “When the World Was Young.”
