About
A reconsideration of this immensely-talented singer/songwriter’s output remains overdue, and a good place to start is The Very Best of Phoebe Snow, a survey of her career highlights from the ‘70s through the ‘90s. The track list is weighted towards her Columbia years, offering samples of her jazz-tinged compositions (“All Over,” “Two Fisted Love”) and R&B-slanted numbers (“Never Letting Go”). Snow’s re-workings of the Beatles’ “Don’t Let Me Down” and Paul McCartney’s “Every Night” from this era are particularly inspired, as are her takes on such uptown pop standards as “Teach Me Tonight.” The Very Best also includes the warm-hearted title song from her 1989 Elektra album Something Real and her smoldering rendition of “At Last,” recorded on tour with the New York Rock and Soul Review in 1991. Previously unreleased live recordings of “Harpo’s Blues” and Sam Cooke’s “Good Times” round out the album. This collection gives a sense of Snow’s unique vocal talents, sophisticated songwriting and risk-taking nature as an artist overall.
