About
White Fence—the work of Tim Presley, who's recorded with The Fall, Strange Boys, and Darker My Love—brings us back to the mid-'60s, when garage bands throughout America and the U.K. recorded in primitive studios and on rudimentary home tape recorders. Many results ended up on the endless Pebbles collections. Yet in 2013, Presley is on a mission to record as much crazy and inspired music as there are hours in the day. Cyclops Reap was initially going to be a collection of odds 'n' sods that fell through the cracks when Presley nixed the idea and quickly recorded this thoroughly enjoyable freakout of sound. "White Cat" uses reverb and unison vocals well above the mix of clashing guitars and rumbling drums. "Live on Genevieve" sounds like a George Harrison track recorded off the radio, with poor audio results but still showing something truly ingenious in the sound. "Pink Gorilla" could be from Pebbles Vol. 3-1/2. The acoustic-intrusive electric overdubs of "Run by the Same" have a charm that's either a disorganized mess or beautiful music.
