About

Montreal's Besnard Lakes—mostly the work of the husband-and-wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas—use a loose songwriting structure to show the strengths of their extensive ambient workouts. The group's sound has consistently shifted over the course of four albums, with 2013's Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO starting with stronger traces of actual songs before slowly ridding themselves of any pretense of verse-chorus and traditional vocal melodies. "And Her Eyes Were Painted Gold" has a notable tune breaking through the hazy patina; its sounds as if Pink Floyd are emerging through the fog. "People of the Sticks" is nearly a '80s-styled pop song. "The Specter," with its phased keyboards and sweet vocal ensemble, emits the feel of a post–Pet Sounds Brian Wilson tune. "At Midnight" brings Goreas to the forefront for a sound nearing The Cocteau Twins. With "Catalina," however, the album drifts into tone poems where the mood and instrumentation tell the tales. It climaxes with the seven-minute "Alamogordo," where The Besnard Lakes break free of all rules and regulations into the night.
