About

1972’s Blue River had been a commercial and artistic breakthrough for Eric Andersen, who’d spent the '60s known as one of the Greenwich Village folk scene’s final stars. The easy-listening, confessional type singer/songwriting that took over radio waves in the early '70s with Carole King, James Taylor, and others was perfect for Andersen, and he seemed poised to break further ground when his label at the time misplaced the tapes to the follow-up album. It was eventually found and issued in 1991 as Stages: The Lost Album, but the momentum was lost. Andersen signed to Arista Records and in 1975 released Be True to You, which features rerecordings of six of the misplaced album's songs, including the title track, “Moonchild River Song,” “Time Run Like a Freight Train," and “Woman, She Was Gentle.” The arrangements are sometimes similar, while others are grander and reflective of the mid-'70s, though Andersen sings them with the same commitment and honesty. His cover of Tom Waits’ “Ol’ 55” sounds influenced by The Eagles’ version on their debut album.
