About

The best way to approach Beady Eye's second album is to try to forget that it's basically the product of Oasis minus Noel Gallagher and embrace the Liam Gallagher–led group as a band unto itself. Despite the choice of Dave Sitek (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio) as producer, precious little American alt-rock influences creep into the sound here. Instead, Beady Eye stay in touch with their '60s psych-pop inspirations, though with a touch more textural frisson than before. BE is a true collective effort, with Liam and guitarists Gem Archer and Andy Bell all pitching in on songwriting. A distinct group identity emerges as things move from the storming, stomping garage rocker "Face the Crowd" to the mix of spare, slinky syncopation and big glam-pop hooks on "Second Bite of the Apple" and the floating, folk-rock-in-outer-space feel of "Don't Brother Me." Regardless if BE entices anyone to forget the former band of Beady Eye's frontman, it's a flavorful slice of psychedelia-kissed modern rock all on its own.
