About

One of the measures of a standard is that it can be revisited in a variety of styles. While there’s no straight bossa nova or reggaeton on (Ǎhk-to͝ong Bāy-Bi) Covered, this track-by-track all-star tribute to U2’s landmark 1991 album Achtung Baby does cover an impressive range of approaches. Nine Inch Nails open with a surprisingly understated electro version of “Zoo Station,” and Jack White closes things out with a swampy, organ-drenched southern Gothic version of “Love Is Blindness.” Some contributors go acoustic and more intimate (Damien Rice on “One,” Patti Smith on “Until the End of the World”), while others keep it futuristic and mostly electronic (Depeche Mode’s take on “So Cruel,” Garbage reworking “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”). The Killers even do a double tribute by seemingly channeling Queen on the intro to “Ultra Violet (Light My Way).” Achtung Baby was the project that transformed U2 from earnest stadium rockers to futurist cyber-pop modernists, and (Ǎhk-to͝ong Bāy-Bi) Covered further explores, expands upon, and even focuses the source material of that legacy.
