About

The Purpose Maker is a 1995 EP by Jeff Mills, released on his Axis Records imprint. The record represents a turning point in Mills’ solo work, moving away from the militant urgency of early Underground Resistance releases toward a more minimal, hypnotic and concept-driven form of Detroit techno. The EP focuses on reduction, repetition and precision, emphasizing groove, space and long-form DJ functionality. The Purpose Maker became a foundational release for the emerging minimal techno aesthetic of the mid-1990s and helped define the philosophical and sonic direction of Axis Records. .
