About
Though the blue-eyed Philly blues man and marble-mouthed rapper G. Love would later dabble in everything from funk and psychedelia to jam-band rock, his goofy, fun-loving debut album serves up a stripped-down sort of play-that-folkie-hip-hop-white-boy sound built on Beck, the Beastie Boys, and Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues." G. drops rhymes over greasy guitar licks, fatback bass, blues harp blast, and shuffling drums-all of it played loose and under-produced to yield a jamming-in-the-basement feel. The lyrics dwell on nothing heavier than the simple pleasures of dusty records, cute girls, icy brews and basketball-which, in order, pretty well sum up this album's best tracks: "Blues Music," "Baby's Got Sauce," "Cold Beverages," and "Shooting Hoops."
