About

Robbie Robertson's first solo album sounds remarkably different from his previous work with The Band, due to his teaming up with producer Daniel Lanois (whose ethereal textures bring out a new level of emotion in his music) and members of Peter Gabriel's backing band. Robertson wasn't considered much of a singer during his tenure with The Band, but here he makes up for lost time with a set that's simply majestic. "Fallen Angel," with Gabriel, pays tribute to the late Band pianist Richard Manuel, with Band organist Garth Hudson adding keyboard flourishes. Gabriel details the striking "Broken Arrow," which became a hit for Rod Stewart. U2 collaborates on "Sweet Fire of Love" and "Testimony." The album is an atmospheric tour de force, a slice of ambient rock 'n' roll, with "Sonny Got Caught in the Moonlight" and "Somewhere Down the Crazy River" highlighting this approach. A slew of special guests keeps things bright and shiny, while Robertson handles the darker end of the spectrum.
